Maple: She is no doubt over priced for an unregistered cow I will admit that! She is only leaving me if the dollar is right or else I am far too attached and would prefer to have another of her babies born on the farm. There may be a tear or two shed if Maple leaves.... I do just adore her. But, she is unregistered and I'm going in a registered direction with my fold, adding many new ladies this fall and need to make some room. Maple (along with the available calves) will only be going to the perfect home - I really do want the best for her and all of my animals, so if I do not know you, I may be asking some questions like the questions below before final payment and pickup. I bought Maple and my two other unreg ladies from a small farm in Southern Saskatchewan winter 2023. I spent soooo much time that winter with the three girls, they all became very tame. They love a brush, I can sit on them when they are laying and they even come when called "COWS" in a high pitched voice. (Not halter trained)
Maple was the first to calve this spring and was a fantastic mother. It was her first calf and she did fantastic. Had her in only about three pushes and her instincts were amazing. Up and licking Nutella immediately. She is so quiet she even let a bottle calf have some nurses off her too this summer. Her calf Nutella is available too - I was very pleased with the quality of Nutella!
NOTE : Bred cow does not mean a guaranteed calf. Cows can miscarry over the winter just like humans from stress, malnutrition, or injuries so this is not a calf guarantee but it is a guarantee of pregnancy when she leaves the property. Video of preg check available and you can contact Vet Agri Health. (Checking soon!!!!)
Deposit of $500 is required to hold her and the remainder is due at pickup - before she is on trailer. Cash, bank draft or e transfer. If you are unhappy with her before leaving you will be reimburse for the deposit.
NOTE: I am travelling to Athebasca Nov 17th and can deliver for free if you live near or on the way! All Edmonton area!
Buyers - I am only wanting to sell to people familiar with cattle already, or ready to dive in but completely set up to handle livestock.
Reminder - highlands are NOT mini, that is not a real thing. They will grow to be around 1100 lbs (females) and can be difficult to work with since they love to use their horns once they figure out how...
Things to consider: are you prepared to restrain if injured meaning do you have a chute or a good way to hold a 1100lb animal?
Cattle are herd animals so they need at least one bovine friend. Do you have or are planning on getting another this fall?
Do you have or can you have a relationship with a large animal vet?
Have you done your research on this breed? - something important to consider is unlike commercial beef cows, highland heifers MUST be two years old to breed - delivering their first calf at 3 or just over 3. They develop slower than commercial cattle being a heritage breed. If bred too soon a bull can severely injure them internally/crush them and or delivering at 2 instead of 3 can stunt their growth and tons of data showing re breeding after delivering at 2 is difficult.
Have you done your research on hay and pasture? Are you familiar with mineral needs, alfalfa risks, grain risks, how much land you'll need or hay you'll need. Are you set up with a trusting winter water supply?
You may want to consider quarantining before introducing to other animals - this is typical farm protocol.
All important things to consider if you are new to cattle.
